This mumei (unsigned) katana, from the Edo period, is a beautifully preserved example of Japanese craftsmanship. With a blade length of 60 cm and a slight curvature of 0.8 cm (sori), this katana is a prime representation of traditional Japanese swords. The blade features a well-defined gunome hamon (wavy temper line), showcasing the meticulous forging techniques of the era.

Specifications:

  • Period: Edo
  • Blade Length: 60 cm
  • Sori (Curvature): 0.8 cm
  • Blade Style: Shinogi-zukuri

Blade Features:

The blade is adorned with a gunome hamon, a wave-like pattern that enhances both the aesthetic and performance of the sword. The medium-sized chu-kissaki (tip) allows for precision in cutting techniques, while the sword’s relatively light weight makes it ideal for fast, controlled movements.

Mountings (Koshirae):

  • Fuchi and Kashira: The fittings are delicately adorned with floral motifs, adding an elegant and traditional touch to the sword’s overall design.
  • Tsuba (Handguard): The iron sukashi tsuba features an intricate floral and openwork design, reflecting the attention to detail typical of Edo period craftsmanship.
  • Menuki: Floral motifs are intricately worked into the menuki, offering a beautiful and symbolic representation of nature on the grip.
  • Saya (Scabbard): The scabbard is finished in black lacquer, maintaining a sleek and traditional appearance in line with the overall elegance of the katana.

Condition:

The katana is in excellent condition for its age, showing no fatal damage like cracks or deep rust. Minor wear from handling is present, but it does not detract from the sword's beauty or functionality. The blade is sharp.
